Japanese Inkwork

Sumi (Chinese
ink) and paper, brush and ink stone
have traditionally been used in East Asia
for both painting and calligraphy.
In this workshop we shall use simple Chinese
characters, some of which are very pictographic,
as a base for our own designs.
Participants can choose which characters they
work with, and, using different dilutions of ink
on the absorbent papers, experiment
with producing different effects.
We will be working slowly, watching the spread
of the ink on the paper, the movement of our brush
across the page as we write, the overlap of the
different layers of ink. In this way we will
bring ourselves into the present and focus
completely on our dialogue with the materials.
It can be an absorbing, enriching experience.
